The government offered to build retired president Kibaki retirement home in his native district of Nyeri.
This is a plan that was hatched in 2010. President Kibaki was informed of this plan and traveled to Nyeri to assess the field where the house would be constructed.
The location happen to have been hived from the extensive Sasini farm, outside the town of Nyeri. Government paid for the land and construction began in earnest.
The half a billion house in located in a sleepy village called Mweiga. Construction was completed as Mwai Kibaki was exiting presidency in March of 2013. However the president never settled in the house that was already give a finish of royal standards. As a matter of fact, Kibaki rarely visits his birthplace in Othaya where he owns another house. This is also the area he has represented as an MP for decades and the residents adore him. He has occasionally joked to the people closest to him that he is a ‘city guy’.
The late First Lady Lucy Kibaki visited the site while construction was underway. She however showed no interest in never settling there even after it was tastefully completed. The president’s children have been spotted entering the residence from time to time. However the modern castle has been largely deserted except for a few staff and security personnel that tend and secure the house.
The home is along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road. It is in every way a mini-state house, complete with a helipad, runway, swimming pool, jacuzzi.
It has huge dark gray gates tightly manned by officers of the hawk-eyed GSU officers.
The area is lush and deforested. All that the usual passerby can see from the nearby road is part of the red tile roof. There’s also a well-trimmed perimeter hedge and an electric fence.
The house is built on a 100-acre piece of land. It has a guest house, security stops, towers and offices, ex-presidential secretariat offices and a staff canteen.
There is a specially constructed green yard that can accommodate 500 guests. This mansion is only an addition to other houses that the president owns in Muthaiga Estate Nairobi and in his shags hood of Munyange village in Othaya, Nyeri.
