Mambo Mbotela’s show ‘Je, Huu Ni Ungwana?’ was birthed After an Encounter with Njonjo’s Stare of Doom!

In his final interview, the legendary broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela shared the unexpected origin story of his iconic radio show, “Je, Huu ni Ungwana?” (Is This Good Manners?). The setting was the prestigious Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, a haunt for the elite, where Mbotela and his colleagues had settled in for a weekend drink.

The fateful moment came when one of Mbotela’s friends began loudly demanding service, disrupting the serene atmosphere. This caught the attention of none other than Charles Njonjo, the then Attorney General, seated just in front of them. Njonjo’s stern look was a silent reprimand, prompting Mbotela to quickly hush his friend, reminding him of their surroundings filled with Kenya’s who’s who.

This embarrassing episode was the catalyst for Mbotela’s reflection on etiquette, leading directly to the conception of his show, which aimed to discuss and promote good manners in society.

Mbotela, who passed away at the age of 85 on February 7, 2025, left behind a legacy spanning over six decades at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). His death was mourned by President William Ruto and numerous national figures, who hailed him as a pivotal figure in broadcasting, sports commentary, and as a mentor to many in the media landscape. His show, “Je, Huu ni Ungwana?”, not only entertained but educated the Kenyan public on decorum, reflecting Mbotela’s profound impact on Kenyan culture.
