NAIROBI county government will soon embark on renovation of old houses in seven city estates after it was granted approval for the project by the National Treasury.
Under the plan, the county government will redevelop the earmarked old estates within the city in a short-term joint venture with developers.
“Nairobi City county government in line with its responsibility for urban management as vested to it under the Urban Areas and Cities Act 2011 plans to undertake a programme aimed at regeneration and renewal of its estates within the county,” it said in a tender notice.
The proposed houses are located on Suna Road, New Ngara, Old Ngara, Uhuru and Pangani estates as well as along Ngong Road and Jeevanje-Bachelors area. Contractors interested in the joint venture will be required to raise at least $60 million (Sh5.82 billion) to fund the project.
The project aims to improve on the density and maximise returns on these properties.
The old estates are located on seven sites measuring a total of 46.4 acres.
The redevelopment is to provide affordable housing for low-income households, with the pilot project expected to deliver 14,000 units.
Bidders interested in the joint venture for construction of the project have until July 3 to submit their proposals.
To be eligible for the contract, Nairobi county government said it expects the bidding contractors to demonstrate their ability to set up a good project management team that will be able to complete the project within 36 months.
