South African rapper Kiernan Forbes, better known as AKA, was shot dead in Durban. He was 35.
According to the local police reports, rapper AKA was reportedly shot and killed outside a well-liked nightclub on Florida Road in Durban.
Reportedly, AKA was standing on the pavement when the shooting broke out.
Speaking to the media, Robert Netshiunda, a spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal police, said that two men were murdered, one of whom was a well-known rapper. He further stated that the victims’ names won’t be made public by the police until a thorough investigation is conducted.
Garrith Jamieson, a spokeswoman for ALS Paramedics said that both men had gunshot wounds and one of them died from his wounds despite best attempts from the medical workers.
The music industry and fans alike were devastated to hear the sudden death of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes just hours before a scheduled performance in South Africa.
An outpouring of grief and support has flooded his Instagram page, as people send their condolences and prayers.
AKA was set to take the stage in Durban and was in the midst of promoting his highly anticipated new album, “Mass Country,” set to be released on February 27. His last post on Instagram showed him at work in the studio and participating in a photo shoot.
His death comes just over a year after the loss of his fiancee, Nelli Tembe, who died in a Cape Town hotel in April 2021. AKA, best known for his hit song “Victory Lap,” leaves behind a daughter named Kairo Olwethu Forbes, born in 2015, from his relationship with DJ Zinhle.
This sad reality reminds the world of the reggae icon Lucky Dube who was felled in a similar version.
