Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular examples of erosion, plate tectonic and weathering, and also one of the deepest gorges in the world. Its deepest point is about 1.8 km, while its average depth is about 1.6km. The rock formations of the canyon are millions of years old. Scientists estimate the gorge may have formed 5 to 6 million years ago when the Colorado River began to cut a channel through layers of rock.
The canyon has been home to thousands of fossils of ancient marine mammals, and the area has been inhabited by human for several thousand years. Archaeologists have discovered ruins and artifacts from inhabitants dating back nearly 12,000 years. The Grand Canyon is a popular tourist attraction for its breath-taking panoramas and incredible sights. Approximately 5 million people visit the area every year. As I walked around the canyon, I kept thinking how wonderful it would be if we were able to package a site in the Rift Valley and market it to the world. Our limited perspective as a country where tourism is concerned is not inspiring. We have over-concentrated our marketing beaches and wildlife, and totally failed to invest in other unique opportunities that Kenya offers.
