Nairobi’s most dangerous estates for women to live

The most dangerous place for women in the entire county can be revealed today — Kawangware.

It tops the list of Nairobi neighbourhoods where women are routinely subjected to rape, sex assaults, beatings and other forms of abuse.

And it is followed in the local list of shame by Kibera, Kenya’s biggest slum.

Then come Rongai, Kayole and Githurai as the places where women most fear to tread.

The big five danger spots are listed  the Gender Violence Recovery Centre GVRC at Nairobi Women’s hospital.

Other main places for violence against women – Kayole, Dandora, Mwiki and Umoja.

Also featuring are the middle-income areas of South B, South C, Imara Daima, Kasarani and Donhlom.

But the focus has shifted to Kawangware with the disclosure that in just one month  65 women were sexually assaulted and four others beaten in the area.

Kibera came second with 52 attacked.

Rongai was third with 50 cases recorded, followed by Kayole with 47 cases over the same period and the fifth worst was Githurai where 31 women were subjected to violence.

 

 

Kayole, Dandora and Mwiki contributed to 44 per cent of sexual violence recorded from Nairobi.

Umoja , South B and South C, Imara Daima, Kasarani and Donhlom accounted for 22 per cent, while up-market areas like Lavington and Westlands contributed to only seven per cent.

The Gender Violence Recovery Centre has become the first port of call for women and girls who have been raped or attacked.
