Six top floors illegally constructed on a building in Nairobi’s Kamukunji area have caved in

A nine storey building has collapsed in Nairobi’s Kamukunji area near Kamukunji Police Station.

The building had rented business stalls for traders in Kamukunji market collapsed today morning.

Goods worth millions of shillings are trapped inside the building following its collapse.

A trader from Kamukunji says that they had noticed a crack on the pillars of the building.

“We woke up and found that the building had collapsed. We are told that it collapsed at around 3 am. The pillars that had held the building somehow had cracks,” said a trader.

 

According to the traders, the building had been put up on a riparian land.

Authorities have confirmed that the extra six top floors were irregularly constructed without proper approvals.

Some people took the opportunity to steal some of the goods from the building.
