Kenya Power has issued a directive to customers enrolled in its prepaid power plan, urging them to update their meters, commonly referred to as token meters, by August in order to maintain access to electricity.
This update is part of a comprehensive global initiative to enhance the security of generated tokens for all prepaid meters utilizing the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).
Joseph Siror, the Managing Director of Kenya Power, announced that a total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are slated for this update. Meters that are not updated by the specified deadline will cease to accept tokens post-deadline.
Customers will receive two codes via SMS from Kenya Power upon purchasing electricity tokens. These codes must be entered into their meters as per the instructions provided in the SMS before loading the new token.
Dr. Siror further explained that in cases where customers have not purchased tokens, Kenya Power will directly send the codes to prompt them to update their meters. This process is straightforward and does not incur any additional costs.
It is important to note that the update will not impact any existing electricity tokens already loaded into the meters. However, customers are advised to load any previously purchased tokens before proceeding with the meter update to avoid invalidating the power units.
Kenya Power emphasizes the significance of complying with this update to ensure uninterrupted access to electricity.
